Luxury vinyl plank

Vinyl plank, often called LVP, looks like wood but is waterproof, quiet and warmer underfoot than tile. Rigid-core planks (SPC and WPC) click together and float over most subfloors, including concrete. It's the most popular choice for finished basements, kitchens, laundry rooms and homes with pets.

Laminate

Laminate is a photographic wood-look layer over a fibreboard core, with a very hard wear surface that resists scratches. It feels and sounds more like wood than vinyl does. Many newer laminates are water-resistant, but standing water can still swell the core, so it's better suited to main floors and bedrooms than basements and bathrooms.

Prep makes the difference

Floating floors need a flat subfloor. Dips and humps cause planks to flex, click, separate or break their locking joints. Good installers check flatness with a long straight edge and grind high spots or level low ones before laying a single plank. In basements, a moisture test on the concrete and the right underlay come first.

Choosing a good product

  • Wear layer: thicker resists scratches and wear longer
  • Core: rigid SPC is the most stable in changing temperatures
  • Attached underlay: helps with sound and comfort
  • Warranty: residential and, for rentals, light commercial

Questions

Is vinyl plank really waterproof?

The planks are. Water can still get under them at the edges if there's a flood, so it's not a substitute for fixing basement leaks, but it won't swell or warp from spills and damp.

Can vinyl plank go over my old floor?

Often, over a flat, solid floor like old sheet vinyl or tile. Carpet always has to come out.

Laminate or vinyl for a kitchen?

Vinyl handles water better. Laminate resists scratches better and feels more like wood. Many installers recommend vinyl for kitchens with kids or pets.

How long does installation take?

A typical basement or main floor takes one to three days, longer if the subfloor needs levelling.
